Obituary for Silke F. Paulsen

Silke F. Paulsen, 53, of Wonder Lake, passed away peacefully with her loving family at her side on June 18, 2020, after a courageous 13-year battle with cancer. Silke was born in Berlin, Germany on Thursday, September 8, 1966 to Dieter and Gisela (Colditz) Paulsen. On April 3, 1996, she married her best friend, Bruce McEwen.

Silke loved to spend time outdoors with horses whether it be pleasure riding, competition riding or just hanging out at the stable. At times Silke would get the “Itch” to travel, often referring to it as becoming “Far-Sick.” Whether it was an equestrian getaway, or just to unwind, Silke would often make her way to the south of France to escape the hustle and bustle of work.

While attending college in Germany, she picked up a liking for organized trail hiking on the weekends. It was on once such hike where she met her future husband Bruce, through a mutual group of friends. Silke, who majored in international tourism, now found herself rediscovering her own country and heritage through Bruce’s eyes and an endless list of curiosity questions as they hiked their way past the vineyards, castles, forests and rivers of Germany. When Bruce’s job in Germany ended, Silke followed him to America where they got married.

In 2003, she obtained her private pilot license and together Bruce and Silke took the idea of being “Far-Sick” to a whole new level as they bought an airplane and flew to destinations unknown- Custer State Park in South Dakota or Yellow Stone National Park, Wyoming to name a few. Silke realized her dream of owning a horse while helping Bruce realize his lifelong dream of actually building an airplane. Although Silke’s cancer diagnosis put an end to the airplane project, the time they spent building it together filled them both with a sense of accomplishment they cherished.

Throughout her battle with cancer, Silke drew upon her bond with horses for strength. Silke was an avid horse lover from the time she was a very small. Her radiant horse, Najee fulfilled a childhood dream and provided her with great pleasure. Silke was also a wonderful big sister and often while growing up, she had the responsibility of helping with her siblings. They were not always 100% obedient as Silke but her commanding influence created a loving bond that they will cherish forever. She was extremely honored to be the Godmother to her nephew, Anton; family was the utmost important to Silke. She was loved and will be missed by all who had the pleasure to know her.

Silke is survived by her loving husband of 24 years, Bruce; her parents; sister, Sibylle Paulsen; brother, Kai Paulsen; nephew and Godson, Anton Duenas Paulsen; mother in-law, Mary Ann McEwen; brother in-law, David (Kathleen) McEwen; 3 nieces; and her beloved horse Najee.
