Obituary for James S. Stockwell

James "Jim" Stuart Stockwell, 75, of Spring Grove, IL, passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at his home surrounded by his children.

Jim was born on March 29, 1944 to Harry and Mary (Coughlin) Stockwell in Chicago. He was a member of the U.S. Army, serving at various U.S. bases around the world. Upon being discharged, he returned to Chicago and met Margit Merete Christensen whom he married on September 15, 1969. Together, he and his wife would have four children; and family would call several places home including Chicago and Wichita, Kansas before settling in Round Lake Beach, Illinois.

Professionally, Jim was a military firefighter with service in two bases in Illinois; Glenview Naval Air Station and Fort Sheridan. He also served in Michigan at Warren Tank Automotive Command; and in Sparta, WI. at Fort McCoy. Upon retiring, James had spent a total of 23 years as a member of the Armed Forces.

Jim spent most of his time doing what he loved most, following around his kids and grandkids. He was known for always being talked into buying ice cream after every event. He also found the time to play golf with his sons, friends, and siblings. Jim was one to always work his mind, during his retired years he authored two novels and continued his education at Eastern Illinois University which included spending a semester studying abroad in England.
Above all, James was a caring and loving father and grandfather who would do anything for his family.

He is survived by his four children, Jim (Kathy) of Johnsburg, Carin (Jack) Shales, of Spring Grove, Cathie Stockwell of Wauconda, and John (Alyssa) of Kensoha, WI.; nine grandchildren, Bryan, Jack, Amber, Sara, Kyle, Zach, Molly, Leighton, and Abriella.; four siblings, Tom (Elaine) Stockwell, Mary Kay (the late Kieran) Doyle, Louise (the late Robert) Roth and Ann Alesi.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Margit in 2000.

A private visitation will be held in celebration of Jim's life, with a private funeral mass to follow on Monday, June 1, 2020. Interment will be in Richmond Township Cemetery in Richmond, IL.
