Obituary for Jack Schmitt

John H. "Jack" Schmitt who farmed his entire adult life in the Spring Grove area died at home on January 4, 2020. He was born on December 5, 1933, in Johnsburg to Albert M. and Frances (Hiller) Schmitt. After his dad died in a farming accident in 1953, he began farming with his mom.

On August 18, 1956, Jack married Beverly Bergsma at St. Peter’s Church in Spring Grove. Together they raised 6 children; David, Cynthia (Bruce) Dantuma, Albert (Janice), Cheri (Mark) Cesaroni, Sandra (Nick) Rusher and Ryan (Jessica). He had 13 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren; Timothy (Chelsea) Dantuma, Tracie (Zach) Dohm, Kristie (Carlos) Saavedra and Lori Dantuma; Cameron (Christa) and Alexa Schmitt, Craig Jakobsen (Pooja Louis) and Emily Jakobsen (Ryan Flynn); Brad and Brandon Cesaroni and Brianna (Sam) Klein; Alec Rusher and Matthew, Katherine and Brooklyn Schmitt. and 3 great grandchildren.

Jack loved people, playing cards and all sports. He especially enjoyed softball which he played for over 30 years. He was a huge fan of Dale Earnhardt and the Chicago Cubs. His claim to fame was to chisel “Go Cubs Go” into his fields in the fall when they reached the playoffs. However, after two divisional series losses, he was forbidden by his children and friends not to put his tractor in the field the year they won the World Series.

Jack was very active in his church community where he was a member of the St. Peter's Holy Name Society and served as an usher for over 50 years. In 1985, he worked tirelessly as part of the committee to remodel the church. He also was a member of the COF, St. John’s Ct., the Johnsburg Community Club and the McHenry County Farm Bureau whose AG Expo he found most interesting as he lead student groups. Jack enjoyed working at their food booth at the McHenry County Fair and participating in the Annual Tractor Trek with any one of his antique tractors. Jack was a charter member of the Trailblazers Snowmobile Club of Richmond. His enthusiasm for snowmobiling and attending spring training for the Cubs in AZ lessened as he had the opportunity to spend the winter months in Marco Island, FL.

Jack's love and devotion to the Spring Grove Fire and Rescue was more than evident in his 50 years serving as firefighter; 35 years as President of trustees; 4 years as Fire Chief; and 4 years as Assistant Chief. Many positive changes and updating of equipment occurred while he was in office including the building of the fire station on Richardson Rd. in 1981 and establishing the rescue squad. He was very proud of the department.

Jack is survived by his loving wife, Beverly of 63 years, his children; his siblings; Georgia Bauer, Donna (Ed) Condon, Barbara (Donald) Wagner, Leon (Ruth), Dennis (Verna) and Gary (Cathy) Schmitt; 26 nieces and nephews. Also surviving are the out-laws; Ken (Muriel) Bergsma, Ron (Barb) Bergsma, Dennis (Deanna) Bergsma and Kathy (Jack) Lindblom.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Elaine, Kathleen and Leone in infancy; brother in law, Roland Bauer; and 5 nephews and nieces.
